memories of the first girl I maybe loved

When we said goodbye
you hugged me tighter than I’ve ever been held
you erupted life
from my exhaustion,
a hitch in my throat
something genuine

the most genuine.

He couldn’t even compare.
He evaporated
and you poured in.

It wasn’t until years later that I knew
I wish it had been you.
